  Brd Station overview and  entrance tunnel.jpg - This is the main entrance tunnel leading from the surface down into Byrd Station, Antarctica, deep into the glacier below. The Station was constructed 50 feet under the surface in a series of interconnecting tunnels. Vertical escape hatches, furnace vents, and radio antennas protrude above the surface. Several small research buildings can also be seen above the surface, raised on stilts to prevent being crushed  under snow drifts.
