Buildings 50 feet under glacier in arched tunnel.jpg - Insulated prefabricated buildings were flown in and constructed in deep trenches at New Byrd Station in 1962. Metal arches were placed overhead and snow was back-filled level with the surface to prevent drifting. Temperatures in the tunnels was about 15° F, warmed somewhat by heat escaping from the heated buildings. Most supplies were stored frozen in the tunnels.
