Byrd escape hatch on surface.jpg - The top of an escape hatch is seen here on the surface. The small poles with flags are connected by ropes for safety when walking on the surface. When the snow blows, the whiteout make it very difficult to find a way back, even in daylight, and the sun disappears for many months creating almost total darkness.
