Byrd hill over entry drifting.jpg - The growing hill of accumulating snow rises above the entrance tunnel, and gradually spreads to cover the entire station. Actual snow fall at this location is only about one inch per year, making it a desert in terms of total precipitation. But the powdery snow blows across the surface and rapidly drifts, soon covering any protrusion. The weight of accumulating snow slowly compresses into pure ice, creating the glacier below. The average temperature at Byrd Station, -13° F (-25° C), the lowest recorded temperature was -82° F (-63° C), the average year-round wind speed is 20 mph. The ice tunnels below were crushed and abandoned a few years after this photo was taken. Byrd Station then became a surface facility, then a summer-only station that moved from place to place each year.
