Antarctic Map
EMC Byrd Snowmobile.jpg - In January, 1967, Elmer was transferred from McMurdo Station to Byrd Station, Antactctica, in dual capacity as both Officer-in-Charge and Medical Officer. Here Elmer is seen overlooking Byrd Station, which is 50 feet under the surface of the glacier in a series of interconnecting ice tunnels. Because surface structures quickly become buried under blowing snow they are raised on stilts to minimize drifting. Station elevation is 7,000 feet above sea level. Fresh water glacial ice is 9,000 feet thick, derived from slow accumulation of snow that compresses into solid ice. This enormous weight has depressed the underlying earth’s surface 2,000 feet below sea level. The newly discovered Cranton Bay was subsequently named after Elmer Cranton for his service in Antarctica.
