  Plateau Station.jpg - Elmer visits the U.S. Plateau Station, not far from Vostok, also built on the surface approximately 600 miles from the South Pole. This is the highest station in Antarctica at 11,890 ft above sea level. An eight-man U.S. crew wintered-over here. The average temperature is minus 80° F, the lowest temperature is minus 121° F, within a degree of the official record low at Vostok, and the warmest temperature measured was minus 28° F.
