South Pole Station air field C-130.jpg - Trekking in to South Pole Station from the nearby ice runway, 9,300 feet above sea level. The ski-equipped C-130 is being offloaded in the background. The plane’s engines are never stopped because the extreme cold would quickly freeze the hydraulic seals, causing leaks. It would then become be very difficult or impossible to leave. The average South Pole temperature is 60° F below zero. The warmest temperature ever recorded here is 7° F and the lowest was -117° F. In midsummer, as the sun reaches its maximum elevation of 23.5 degrees above the horizon, temperatures average around −12° F (−25 °C). Toward the end of the six-month’s of full-time daylight, the sun gets progressively lower and then disappears for 6 months of Antarctic night. Temperatures around sunset (late March) and sunrise (late September) average −49° F.
