  Trench and Arch Construction .jpg - After trenching into the glacier, prefabricated buildings were constructed and metal arches placed overhead.  Snow and crushed ice was back filled level with the surface to minimize snow drifting, which will eventually crush the station. This photo was taken at South Pole Station. The newer Byrd Station was trenched deeper and the arches were mounted part way up the trench walls, as shown in subsequent photos.
