Hyperbaric Medicine Therapy in a Sechrist Monoplace Chamber

Sechrist Industries is a world leader in clinical hyperbaric chambers and has the largest installed base in the world, with over 1,100 chambers in operation. The first chamber manufactured by Sechrist is still in daily use at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach, California, after approximately 26 years and 30,000 patient treatments.  Sechrist hyperbaric oxygen chambers enjoy an unsurpassed reputation for quality, safety and dependability.

Sechrist chambers are designed to house a single patient—although a parent or other relative may accompany a small child inside the chamber during treatment, if the two together are not overly large. The chamber features a pneumatic control system and a unique full length, acrylic observation window. Full 360-degrees vision is maintained, as well as two-way communication with both the operator and any family members present. Typically, a patient will spend an hour or sometimes longer in the chamber. While in the chamber the patient not only breathes 100% oxygen at much higher than normal pressures, but unlike multiplace chambers, the entire body is fully immersed in 100% oxygen (unlike treatment in a multiplace chamber where the body is pressurized in room air and oxygen is breathed through a mask or hood. The amount and pressure of dissolved oxygen in body tissues and fluids is increased by 7-1/2 to 10 times ambient concentration during treatment.  Before use, the oxygen is rigorously tested and certified to be free of any trace of chemicals fumes or pollutants. Four hundred liters per minute of 100% percent pure, pharmaceutical grade and medically approved oxygen flows continuously through the chamber. (Commercial oxygen as used by some facilities, by welders and otherwise in industry is definitely not used here.)

The Mount Rainier Clinic is equipped with Sechrist Model 2500B HBO chambers as shown below.

The rate of pressurization can be individually adjusted for each patient's comforts, allowing painless equilibration of ear and sinus pressure (unlike treatment multiplace chambers where a group of people are treated together). There is no need for ear drum surgery to allow air pressure to equalize, as is sometimes needed for multiplace chambers. In the event of an emergency, a patient can be removed from the chamber in less than one minute. Back-up systems insure safe operation in the event of a power outage.
