FOOD INTOLERANCES, ALLERGIES, REACTIONS, ETC.

Before reading the below article, it is recommended that the website linked  immediately below be thoroughly reviewed. This is a complex, multifactorial subject with no simple explanations and no simple solution.

CHRONIC FATIGUE AND IMMUNE DYSFUNCTION SYNDROME
Food and Chemical Sensitivity, MSG Related Symptoms

Multiple symptoms of a seemingly unrelated nature are often misdiagnosed as neurotic but can be caused by immune system dysfunction, which in turn can be caused or aggravated by increase in body contents of Candida albicans and other yeast and fungus organisms.  Treatments which reduce levels of yeast and fungus in the body, thereby reducing stress on the immune system, can often bring lasting improvement to patients who have been unresponsive to other types of treatment. This type of illness is increasingly prevalent and usually goes unrecognized by the mainstream medicine. The link below leads to a lengthy, detailed paper on this subject by Dr. Cranton.

Hidden MSG added to Foods is an Inspected Cause of Many Symptoms
often Attributed to Yeast, Allergy or Food Sensitivity

Before reading the section below, it is recommended that you click here to read  another website  link to learn how many packaged, canned and processed foods contain hidden and disguised MSG (monosodium glutamate or the equivalent free glutamate) that may cause MSG reactions in sensitive people.  The following substances found on food labels impart factory-created free glutamate (a form of MSG) in varying amounts. Some additives and artificial sweeteners (such as Aspartame and Equal) metabolize to create MSG-like precursors in the body. Please note that some food labels list several of these items, which can add up to a considerable amount of excitotoxin in one product. This practice by the food industry is legal and allowed by the FDA

The amount of MSG or free glutamate in foods containing ingredients listed below may be too small to be of concern, but be suspicious. The the most likely foods to cause problems have the following ingredients listed on their label: MSG (Ajinomoto, Vetsin, and Accent), hydrolyzed protein, hydrolzed or autolyzed anything, yeast extract, sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, bouillon, broth, and natural flavoring.

Aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet);  Malted Barley (flavor); Natural Flavors; Flavors; Flavoring; Modified food starch; Barley malt; Reaction flavors; Rice syrup or brown rice syrup; Malt Extract or Flavoring; Natural Chicken, Beef, or Pork, Flavoring; "Seasonings" (Most assume this means salt, pepper, or spices and herbs, which sometimes it is, but often is not); Lipolyzed butter fat; Maltodextrin; dextrose, dextrates; Soy Sauce or Extract; "Low" or "No Fat" items; Caramel Flavoring (coloring); Soy Protein; Corn syrup and corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup; Stock, Soy Protein Isolate or Concentrate; Citric Acid (when processed from corn); Broth; Cornstarch; fructose (made from corn); Milk Powder; Bouillon; Flowing Agents; Dry Milk Solids; Carrageenan; Wheat, Rice, corn, or oat protein; Protein Fortified Milk; Whey Protein or Whey; Anything enriched or vitamin enriched; Annatto; Whey Protein Isolate or Concentrate; Protein fortified "anything"; Spice; Pectin; Enzyme modified proteins; Gums (guar and vegetable); Protease; Ultra-pasteurized dairy products; Dough, conditioners; Protease enzymes; Fermented proteins; Yeast Nutrients; Lecithin; Protein powders such as whey, soy, oat, rice (as in protein bars shakes and body building drinks); Amino acids (as in Bragg's liquid amino acids;  Algae; phytoplankton; sea vegetable; wheat or barley.

Food companies routinely add chemicals like these to their products to stimulate hunger and disrupt normal appetite control? Items in bold face type above are the more likely to be MSG related. It's a clever (but downright devious) strategy for selling more food and boosting the profits of food corporations. But the truth about these chemicals--known as excitotoxins--is hidden from consumers. Food companies don't want you to know that these chemicals cause obesity, infertility, migraines, cancer, allergic sensitivities, among other health problems. READ LABELS.

MSG reactions are not immunological and are thus not allergic in nature. MSG causes in high enough doses may cause chemical reactions in susceptible people--estimated at more than 30% of the population. Sensitivity varies widely from person to peson.

It is becoming apparent that symptoms described in the section below may be caused, at least in part, by  MSG related food additives.

Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS)

Descriptive diagnostic terms variously used for this syndrome include: Chronic fatigue, immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), Epstein-Barr virus syndrome, yeast related illness, Candidiasis, and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). It has a strong component of ecologic illness, environmental illness, hypoglycemia-like symptoms, food and chemical sensitivity, and food allergy. The common thread is immune dysfunction, and in some cases hormonal imbalance. Medical conditions in this spectrum often benefit from the program of therapy described in the paper linked above and as documented by case histories linked below.

Case Histories (Patient's stories in Their Own Words)

The most common and incapacitating symptom is profound and prolonged fatigue, without another plausible cause. Depression or difficulty concentrating and thinking is often present, sometimes severe. Physical examination and laboratory tests seldom point to a the diagnosis. As a result, such patients are usually labeled neurotic, hypochondriac or depressed. Adverse reactions to many nutritious foods (so-called food allergy) is common, as well as sensitivity to chemical fumes. Respiratory allergy of the hay fever type is sometimes present. Stomach, intestinal, urinary, reproductive, muscle and joint symptoms are common. Every case is different and the target organs can vary greatly. The brain is almost always affected.

When seeking treatment, it is important for the the health care provider to recognize and understand CFIDS.

Effective treatment consists of initially of a combination of anti-fungal medicines, avoidance of the most commonly reactive foods and environmental exposures, and supplemental vitamins, minerals and trace elements. This program is designed to relieve stress on the immune system, allowing it to rest and regain its ability to cope with normal day to day exposures and stresses. Treatment also provides nutritional support for a dysfunctional immune system.
